Volunteer with Rescue Dogs in Thailand
Not Your Typical Animal Rescue Experience
If you’ve ever dreamed of getting involved in animal rescue volunteering in Thailand, our program offers a truly unique and meaningful way to begin. While there are many opportunities to volunteer with animals in Thailand, most don’t go far beyond the experience of simply being here. At Second Chance Dog Shelter in Pattaya, our approach to animal rescue volunteering in Thailand is different — not just in the country, but worldwide.
Our shelter is home to around 90 rescued dogs, many of them disabled. All were close to death when found — hit by cars, attacked with machetes, or suffering from severe neglect — which is why we call it Second Chance.
What sets our dog rescue in Thailand apart is how we involve volunteers. Instead of just cleaning kennels or feeding dogs, we focus on building trust and transforming fear into confidence. Many Thai rescue dogs are skittish around strangers due to past trauma, so our animal rescue volunteers play a key role in helping them feel safe around people again.
Second Chance is both a dog rescue shelter and a sanctuary. The dogs are safe with us for life if needed, but our real goal is adoption — ideally into loving homes in Thailand or abroad. Unfortunately, fearful dogs are often overlooked by potential adopters. People want a companion they can walk, play with, and cuddle. By spending time with the dogs, helping them open up and show their true personalities, our volunteers help make that vision a reality.

Volunteer With Rescue Dogs & Rehabilitate Them
Animal rescue volunteers have one thing in common, they want to get the rescued animal back to as normal a life as possible. For wild animals it is rescue, rehabilitate and release. But for Soi Dogs ( Soi means street in Thai ), the release isn’t always possible, sometimes it is, but sometimes it’s not the best option. Some have injuries that mean they wouldn’t survive, but there are many reasons. So our goal becomes Rescue, Rehabilitate and Adopt. As mentioned earlier for our rescue volunteers we don’t feel the best use of them is to clean, we want them to interact with the dogs so they get used to meeting new people and lose their fear of strangers.
What You Will Learn
The Best Way To Build Trust With Dogs & Make Them More Adoptable
Our goal is to get our rescue dogs adopted — primarily into loving homes in Thailand, but also internationally. We realized the best way to do this was through training.
That’s why we created a program where volunteers work alongside professional dog trainers in Thailand. Over a two- to four-week course, volunteers learn basic obedience, agility, and how to address common behaviour issues — all while training the rescue dogs as their partners.
This close interaction helps the dogs build trust and confidence. It also transforms them into dogs that adopters are looking for: responsive, happy to meet people, and able to walk calmly on a leash.
As we’ve found, potential adopters often have a picture in their mind of the ideal companion — a dog that walks nicely, plays, and enjoys human company. When they meet one of our trained dogs who runs the agility course with joy, greets visitors enthusiastically, and sits calmly for attention, they can clearly see the dog’s potential.
The transformation is powerful — from fearful and overlooked to confident and adoptable. You can be a big part of that transformation.
